Man Born with “Upside Down Head” Not Expected to Live Past 24 Hours

A Brazilian man who was born with an “upside down” head was not expected to live for even 24 hours. Now, he is 44 years old with a full career ahead of him.

Claudio Vieira de Oliveira lives in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Bahia. He suffers from arthrogryposis multiplex congenita.

The condition means that he has atrophy of the leg muscles, his arms are stuck to his chest, and his head is turned upside-down all the way back.

Despite doctors saying he would not live a full 24 hours, Claudinho is now grown with the hopes of becoming a motivational speaker.

So far, his condition has not stopped him from doing things he enjoys. But due to the pandemic, he has had to put all of his big dreams on hold.

Speaking to G1, a Brazilian news site, Claudinho said, “I’ve never had [difficulties], my life is normal. I’m in full-on quarantine because this Covid is very aggressive, it’s lethal, so we’re scared. Spare me, God, from this damned illness.”

“I’m being over twice as careful, I’ve been isolating for over a year and I only leave the house to sort out things that only I can do, such as banking,” he said.

Claudinho has always made sure that his condition didn’t hold him back. At the age of seven, he was determined to live his life to the fullest. He learned to read and write at home with his mother as a child.

Even though his condition can make things more difficult, Claudinho has never had a problem with seeing, breathing, eating or drinking.

He has even made his rare condition work for him. He has launched a DVD, written an autobiography, and has been giving speeches since 2000.

Unfortunately, with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Claudinho has had to put his speeches on hold.

“I’m missing it so much. I’ve got a speech in the municipality of Bezerra, in the state of Pernamubco, scheduled for 28 April. If the pandemic eases, we’ll go ahead,” he said.

Claudinho also wants to get back to work after the pandemic is over. He volunteers with a Christian educational project called “Alegra-te,” which helps vulnerable children.

“I want to give my talks again and live for many years,” Claudinho said.

  1. There is a man in China, Li Hua, whose back was permanently bent over so that his face touched his thighs 24/7.
He had surgery to straighten his back and he can now stand upright.

7/16/20 -“‘Folding man’, Li Hua, 46, who had a severely deformed spine for over 25 years due to a rare condition, can finally walk again after surgeons ‘opened up’ his body via life-changing surgery.

The Chinese man had four operations last year to treat his rare type of arthritis.
He had lived with his face pressed tightly against his thighs for about 10 years.
Surgeons performed a series of high-risk procedures to help him stand upright.
He then received recovery treatment for six months and has largely recovered.”

This type of surgery might be something Claudio Vieira de Oliveira might be interested in looking into for his neck/head.
Being able to see where he is going, upright, for safety, would be a motivator for looking into this.
