A Florida woman will serve prison time after admitting that she intentionally coughed on and threatened a shopper that was wearing a mask. The altercation was caught on video and went viral last year.

According to The New York Times, which cited court records, Debra Hunter, 53, will serve 30 days in jail.

A Jacksonville judge also sentenced Hunter to six months probation and will require her to participate in a mental health evaluation and anger management course, according to an email from David Chapman, the communications director for the state attorney’s office in Jacksonville.

Hunter, from Fernandina Beach, was also ordered to cover the costs of her victim’s previous COVID-19 test and pay a $500 fine.

Hunter has already received credit for the one day she spent in jail last year.

The incident happened last June at a Jacksonville Pier 1 Imports store. Heather coughed on fellow shopper Heather Sprague, who was recording video of Hunter’s altercation with the store employees.

Sprague later revealed that she is a brain cancer patient. Since her treatments left her immunocompromised, she was on a rare public outing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the video recording, Hunter gets aggressive with store employees before turning around toward Sprague with a two-handed obscene gesture. “I think I’ll get really close to you and cough on you then,” Hunter said. “How’s that?”

Hunter entered her plea last month after Judge James Ruth told her he was ready to move ahead with jury selection for a trial.

Hunter agreed to plead guilty, but because the plea deal did not include the option for jail time, the judge rejected it.

Hunter, a mom of three, wrote a three page letter to the judge in an attempt to explain her actions.

“My daughter was alarmed when she noticed a stranger recording the three of us with her phone. Admittedly I was immediately infuriated and demanded this customer to stop filming my kids. In the heat of the moment, I over reacted in an over protective manner which ultimately led to my retaliation on this stranger, the victim. And that highly regrettable, split second, knee jerk reaction has cost my family dearly,” she wrote. 

Hunter included an additional 23 pages documenting harassing texts, emails, letters and social media posts targeting her and her family.

“Despicable, vile skank. I hope your whole family gets COVID and suffers immensely, then dies,” one user wrote to her.

“We no longer take family bike rides around the neighborhood. We no longer wave at neighbors passing by,” Hunter said.

“I realize this all may sound like a bad movie script,” she added. “I assure you, I never thought I would be playing a starring role in a social media feeding frenzy.”
