Parents Charged in Death of Daughter Who Died by Eating French Fries

Forty-four-year-old Aremo Akinloba and 46-year-old Anna Akinloba of Jacksonville, Florida, have officially been charged in the death of their 7-year-old daughter, Omera, who passed away in 2018.

According to a Naval Criminal Investigative Service warrant for their arrest, the parents failed to provide adequate medical care for their daughter in the five years before her death.

Omera had a rash all over her body before she died. She also lived on a diet of only french fries.

Omera stayed home from school on April 1, 2018 because she was feeling sick. Her mother told authorities that Omera had eaten very little that day.  The Florida Department of Children and Families confirmed that her diet was extremely limited on this day.

But she was otherwise “acting normally.” Ten days later, on April 11, Omera was lethargic and had no appetite. That same day, Omera vomited before a family trip to the zoo.

Her parents put her to bed, but she refused to eat anything.

They watched her as she slept until about 9 p.m. At midnight, they were woken up by sounds of Omera gagging. The 7-year-old threw up again.

By 5 a.m. the next day, Omera had difficulty breathing.

She then stopped responding when her parents spoke to her. Instead of calling 911, the parents decided to drive Omera to the hospital at Naval Air Station Jacksonville because they thought it would be faster.

At the hospital, Omera was “not breathing and dehydrated.” She was also described as “unresponsive, pulseless.”

At 7:34 a.m. on April 12, Omera was officially declared dead from sepsis.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office conducted a criminal investigation and found no evidence to “suggest abuse or neglect in the home” and the medical examiner’s autopsy determined that her death was due to “multi-organism bacterial sepsis.”

However, the First Coast Child Protection Team felt differently. They reviewed Omera’s file and concluded there was evidence of neglect.

According to her file, Omera’s parents stopped vaccinating her after 17 months.

After that, they said she had a “change in behavior” and “believed it was due to the vaccinations,” the NCIS report noted. The parents also self-diagnosed her with autism but never went to a medical professional to confirm the diagnosis or treat her.

They also diagnosed their daughter with eczema and used over-the-counter products to treat it. A post-mortem also revealed that Omera had pellagra, which the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology describes as “a systemic disease that results from severe vitamin B3 (Niacin) deficiency.”

The warrant for the parents’ arrest states that Omera’s diet severely changed when she turned 4.

Instead of eating a nutrient-rich diet, she mostly ate french fries, the Florida Times-Union reported. She was also homeschooled, but no records could be found of Omera being enrolled in a state-approved homeschool program.

Both parents are being charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and are being held on $150,000 bail each.

  1. For the mom that killed her disabled son, she should have relinquished her rights and given him to the state. The state would have taken care of him, with necessary meds etc

  2. How can anyone treat a child like that, that poor baby must of been suffering for a long time. They should have the same done to them, what happened to the days of bread and water for prisoners.?
