Girl Dragged Behind Car for Miles After Trying to Escape Stolen Vehicle

A 13-year-old girl was killed in Wichita, Kansas over the weekend after trying to escape her family’s car while a suspect was stealing it.

Brianna Ibarra was dragged for miles on the highway behind the vehicle that was driven by the alleged carjacker. She did not survive.

According to investigators, Brianna was waiting inside her family’s SUV that was parked outside a restaurant while other family members went inside to pick up the food. Kevin Palmer, 34, got in the driver’s seat to steal the vehicle and took off with Brianna still in the car.

Brianna tried to escape by jumping out of the car while it was moving, but she got caught in the seatbelt.

Local news outlet KAKE-TV said that “Wichita Police received several calls from motorists that a woman was being dragged by a vehicle along Kellogg for several miles.”

Police eventually caught up with the vehicle and pulled over the car thief. He tried to flee but was apprehended by officers.

Brianna was pronounced dead at the scene. Palmer has been charged with felony murder.

“This is one of the saddest cases I have been associated with in my over 28 years of law enforcement,” Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said of the incident.

Brianna’s family described her as “full of life,” and “a beautiful soul.”

“The loss of (our) daughter was a tragedy that no family should have to go through,” her parents said.

Brianna’s older sister, Marissa, described Brianna as someone who “loved to create” and was “easy and fun to be around. She was bright, carefree, straightforward, family-oriented, strong, would do anything for (her) family, affectionate.”

A family friend has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral costs and “any expenses needed until this family can get back on their feet and back to work.” So far, it has raised more than $17,500 of its $50,000 goal.
