A German politician has died after becoming sick halfway through a flight. Investigators believe it was a “cardiac incident.”

Karin Strenz, the 53-year-old MP, was on a flight from Varadero, Cuba to Frankfurt, Germany when she fell ill early on Sunday morning.

The Condor flight DE-199 had to be re-directed to Ireland’s Shannon Airport after the staff declared a medical emergency while it was still west of Ireland.

Ms. Strenz, who represented the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the Bundestag for Angela Merkel’s CDU party, was traveling with her husband.

An ambulance was waiting as the Boeing 767-300 landed at about 7.30am.

Strenz was treated at the airport before being rushed to University Hospital Limerick, where she was pronounced dead.

It is unknown whether Strenz had been traveling for personal or business reasons or what could’ve possibly caused her death. An autopsy will be carried out.

Strenz also happens to be one of the three center-right politicians in Merkel’s party who faced allegations of taking money from oil-rich Azerbaijan in exchange for lobbying for the authoritarian regime.

Earlier this year, she was fined 20,000 euros (£17,000) for accepting undeclared donations. She become the subject of an investigation in January.

If found guilty, she would have faced up to 5 years in prison.
