A Tennessee man is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse in the death of his infant daughter, who suffocated after he allegedly fell on top of her while he was under the influence of drugs in April, police said.

Lebanon Police officers and paramedics responded to a report of an unresponsive infant and an unresponsive man at a motel on the 900 block of Murfreesboro Road on April 3.

Officers found Lebanon resident Jesse Wayne Craddock, 38, responsive but disoriented, at the motel, according to Lebanon Police.

The 4-month-old girl was hospitalized at Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined she died from asphyxiation.

Craddock, the child’s father, was allegedly in possession of suspected narcotics, police said. He was taken into custody.

The girl had been left in the care of her father while her mother was at work, police said.

Police said Jesse Craddock was under the influence of fentanyl, and fell on top of the baby. Craddock remained on top of the child until she died, police said.

Jesse Craddock was indicted by a grand jury on charges of first-degree murder; aggravated child abuse/neglect; and fentanyl possession. Craddock was already in custody at the Wilson County Jail on a probation violation, Lebanon Police said. Craddock is scheduled to appear in court on July 26.
