A one-year-old boy has died after he was mauled by his family’s dog while home alone with his brothers on Tuesday night, police said.

Officers responded to a residence in the 300 block of East 17th Street in the Flatbush neighborhood at around 10.45 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about a child who was attacked by a dog, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department told Newsweek.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the 19-month-old boy “heavily bleeding” after sustaining bite wounds to the neck and shoulder. He was transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The dog was contained inside a room in the residence when police had arrived at the scene, the NYPD spokesperson said.

Emergency Service Unit personnel responded to the scene and took custody of the dog, which was brought to Animal Care and Control, the spokesperson added.

Police said the deceased child’s identity was not yet being released.

The child’s father left the boy with his brothers—aged 9 and 11—in the family’s ground floor apartment while he went to work on Tuesday evening, the New York Daily News reported. The child’s mother was also at work, according to PIX11.

The boy’s siblings reportedly ran outside to get help after the dog attacked him. A passerby stop and pulled the boy out of the apartment, according to the Daily News.

An investigation is underway, and the parents could face charges.

It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the attack. But police sources told PIX11 that one of the boy’s brothers told officers he had been attacked by the Rottweiler in the past, and showed them a scar on his leg.

The incident is the latest in a series of fatal maulings by family pets in the U.S.

Last week, 60-year-old Rhoda Wagner was found dead on the lawn outside her home in Miller Township, Pennsylvania, after being mauled by three pit bull terriers she was looking after for her roommate.

It wasn’t clear what prompted the attack, but the Pennsylvania State Police said the dogs were euthanized with the consent of their owner,

In May, a 10-month-old baby in North Carolina was killed after being attacked by the family’s two Rottweilers.

The attack in Willow Springs occurred while the infant was left unattended inside the home for a few minutes.
